I'm really struggling with the whole "we don't put our baby Jesus in the manger until Christmas day" idea which some are keen to. Ok, maybe I'm not struggling with the concept, but it's very difficult to explain to a 2-year-old. The first time I saw it this season was at a tree lighting in our neighborhood. We had gotten there late, and I told Claire that we were going to go see Baby Jesus and the Christmas trees. She was so excited to go see baby Jesus. As we walked up, I realized that the manger was empty. "Where'd Baby Jesus go?" Claire said, with her cute little scrunchy nose and her arms in a perfect question-asking pose. Thankfully, Mary was positioned in a way that looked like she could have been holding him. So, I told Claire that His mommy was holding him. That appeased her. Sure I could say, "he's not there because it's not Christmas day yet", but time is a very difficult concept for little ones, and I felt like it was just harder. Then, we went to Christmas Tree Lane this past Sunday, and there was a manger scene, which I really appreciated. Again, Baby Jesus was missing. Claire asks again, "Where's Baby Jesus?" Since it worked so well the first time, I pulled my old trick... But, this Mary was in prayer position, and clearly not holding a baby. So, after I said, "Do you think His mommy is holding him?" Claire responded very confidently, "No. She's not." Ah geez.
